Jeep compass battery light

Jeep compass battery light DEFAULT
Thanks. I think your probably right. Took it to a station a friend of mine has and he said he thought it was the Power Train Module which I guess is the same as the PCM. He never mentioned the TIPM. I checked all the fuses in the top fuse box and only found 1 that was blown, a 20 amp interior lock and light fuses, and replaced that one. He suggested I take it to a "auto electric" place to have it tested. ( $ with a 2 day wait) It's truly a nightmare as I now have 2 new batteries, had someone install two alternators because I was told they where bad and now the guy who has the station said, "heck, it might not have been the alternator at all" REALLY! Now, so far, I've spent over $, and the car is no better off then the day it happened. And it looks like it's still a huge uphill battle.
I'm not sure if I have a L or a L. I will check on that when I get it from the station tomorrow. Maybe I'll get real lucky and the battery will have enough life to make it home. Thanks for your help. Very much appreciated. Not sure what my next step will be but we appreciate ya.

The battery is one of the most essential components of any vehicle. It is responsible for keeping the car running, as well as powering most of the creature comforts in the vehicle, such as the windows, air conditioning, headlights, interior lights, and radio.

As a result, it’s important to maintain the battery and promptly address any issues that arise with it, which are often indicated by an illuminated battery light.

What does the battery light look like?

The battery light typically takes the form of a picture of a battery on your dashboard, but sometimes it will just be the word “battery.”

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Faulty or failed alternator: When the battery light comes on, chances are there’s not actually a problem with your battery. Usually it’s a problem with the system that keeps your battery charged. Many battery light issues center around the alternator, which is a generator used for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. In short, the alternator takes the power that the vehicle’s crankshaft is generating, and converts that power into electrical energy, which it then sends to the battery. If your alternator is unable to produce an adequate amount of voltage, then the battery light will illuminate. When an alternator completely fails, your vehicle is entirely reliant on the battery for electrical energy, which means the car will soon stop running, as spark plugs rely on electrical energy.

  • Bad voltage regulator: The voltage regulator is attached to the alternator and controls how much voltage the alternator is outputting. The voltage regulator limits the amount of voltage the alternator can send to the battery, and also increases the output when the extra voltage is needed. When this regulator breaks or malfunctions, the alternator no longer doles out the correct voltage into the electrical system.

  • Worn-out serpentine belt: The serpentine belt – which helps drive not only the alternator, but also multiple other peripheral devices – can snap, which renders the alternator relatively useless.

  • Corroded battery terminals or cables: While alternator-based issues are the main cause of the battery light coming on, it’s not completely uncommon for the triggering issue to reside in the battery itself. Just like with a battery in a remote, your car battery can die over time. Corrosion on the battery terminals or on the battery cables can also prohibit the battery’s ability to power the vehicle’s electrical unit.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the source and cause of the battery light, using a voltage meter, amp meter, and load tester to assess whether the issue is in the battery or in the alternator. The battery, alternator, regulator, and serpentine belt are all easily accessible, often making it fairly simple for the mechanic to assess what is wrong with your electrical system.

After the inspection, the mechanic will provide a detailed report that describes the source and cause of the issue, along with the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How important is this service?

When your battery ceases to work, your car will stop running. After the battery light has come on, you’ll likely be unable to restart the vehicle or drive it very far without it dying. Enlist the help of a professional to diagnose the issue as soon as possible.

If your Jeep Compass&#;s battery light is on, it means a few things.  It is trying to warn you that there is an issue with the charging system.  The charging system itself is relatively simple.  It&#;s almost always going to be caused by a bad battery or alternator.

The battery light comes on when it detects that the voltage in the battery is too low.  Most battery lights will come on when the vehicle starts if the computer has detected that the voltage was too low for a quality start.  With an older battery, you will often notice this on the first truly cold day of the year.

You may have noticed your Compass struggling to start, and then the battery light stays on after the start.  That would indicate a bad battery, but it&#;s still worth your while to have it tested first.

Jeep Compass Battery Light Causes

The charging system in vehicles hasn&#;t changed that much in the last 50 years.  The engine turns the alternator, which charges the battery.  There isn&#;t a lot to it, which makes diagnosing it relatively simple.

1. Battery

The battery is primarily there to start your Compass.  It can run off the alternator just fine once it&#;s started.  This is an important thing to know.  A bad battery usually makes itself known when you are trying to start the vehicle.

2. Alternator

Jeep Compass Battery Light Diagnosis

A bad alternator will usually make itself known when the engine is already running.  If you see your Compass&#;s battery light turns on while the engine is already running, that is a strong indication that the alternator is no longer providing enough wattage to power the various electrical systems and charge the battery at the same time.  A new alternator will rectify the problem.

3. Alternator Belt

Nearly all modern vehicles use a serpentine belt to turn the alternator.  The serpentine belt turns more than one engine accessory (A/C compressor, power steering, etc).  If the serpentine belt goes bad, it will no longer be able to turn your Compass&#;s alternator enough for it to get an adequate charge.

4. Battery Post Corrosion

The voltage from the alternator is sent to the battery through a wire that connects to the battery post.  If the battery post is really corroded, it won&#;t be able to do its job of sending the voltage to and from the battery efficiently, and your Compass&#;s battery light will turn on.

It only takes a second to check it out.  A battery post cleaner or wire brush can clean it up in no time.  Just be careful not to get any of the corrosion in your eye.

Battery Light Diagnosis:  Jeep Compass

You can diagnose whether your Compass&#;s alternator is bad pretty quick at home.  If you have a voltage meter, that&#;s a fantastic place to start.

Voltage Test

The first thing that you&#;ll want to do is get a good multimeter.  With a multimeter you do a quick test to see if your Compass&#;s alternator is working or not.

The following was taken from bad alternator diagnosis page on this site:

  1. Set the multimeter to read voltage. Specifically, you’ll need to set it to 20V DC.
  2. With your Compass turned off, you’ll connect the negative side of the meter to the negative battery post or wire.  Touch the positive side of the voltmeter to the positive battery wire.  With the engine off, you should get a reading somewhere between volts and volts.
  3. Now that you have a baseline, it’s time to turn the engine on.  Leave the air conditioner off, as well as the headlights and any other accessories.
  4. After firing the engine up, you should get over volts.  If you got or more volts, the alternator is charging fine.  If it’s still showing in the 12’s, it’s time to replace the alternator.  If it’s producing a voltage level in the 13’s, go ahead and take it into a parts store and have it tested.  It’s probably bad.
  5. Now, assuming that the alternator was producing over 14 volts, go ahead and turn on the headlights, air conditioner, radio, and any other accessory you can think of, and run the same test all over again.  If the voltage dropped back into the 12’s, it’s a very strong indication that your Compass&#;s alternator is bad.  It’s still worth having it tested, but be prepared to replace it.

Battery Test

If the alternator seemed to be charging the battery fine, then it is time to move on to the battery itself.  We recommend taking it to the local parts store.  Almost all of them will test it for free.  If it&#;s bad, they&#;ll even install the new one.

Conclusion:  Jeep Compass Battery Light

Your Compass will operate for a short period of time off of the battery alone.  But, if the alternator has gone bad, it will eventually leave you stranded.  If your battery light comes on when you are on the road, get somewhere to have it tested as soon as you can.  If you feel there is anything you can add, please leave a comment below.  Good luck!
