Broncos' Salary Cap Update After Wave 1 of Free Agency: $39.1M in Space

After a big first week, the Denver Broncos have been relatively quiet in free agency the past couple of days, but it's not for a lack of cap space. In fact, the Broncos have plenty of cap space to add a couple more free agents.

Over the Cap, as of March 24, shows the Broncos with $39.1 million in cap space. However, OTC is still confirming contract numbers for recently-signed players, so not all cap numbers are up-to-date at the site.

A brief note here: OTC doesn't make adjustments to its pages until it confirms contract structures. That's why you've seen instances in which OTC's numbers showed teams exceeded the cap when, in reality, they had gotten under the cap, but some contract numbers hadn't been made public (though they are known to the NFL).

When it comes to the Broncos, their cap number isn't accurate because the exact contract structures for cornerback Kyle Fuller and safety Kareem Jackson aren't yet known. However, if we assume the Broncos are applying the full hits of their 2021 contracts to this year ($9.5M for Fuller and $5M for Jackson), the team should have $26.2M in cap space with 65 players under contract.

What the Broncos do with that cap space remains to be seen, but it does allow for the team to add another free agent or two, whether it's bringing back somebody from their 2020 roster or adding an outside free agent. And it still gives Denver the space to sign their draft picks.

However, it's possible general manager George Paton could be holding onto that space for a potential trade down the road, or he might be trying to keep cap space to carry over into 2022 when multiple younger players could be in line for extensions. Broncos fans may have been used to how John Elway and his staff managed the cap, keeping signing bonuses small, yet using as much cap space as possible.

Elway's goal was to carry over about $10M each year. However, Paton could see things differently.

Paton wouldn't be the first GM to carry over a lot of cap space from one year to the next. Indianapolis Colts GM Chris Ballard has done this every year. Of course, Ballard tends to avoid free agency and focus on the draft to build the roster, so his method doesn't require utilizing a lot of cap space.

Still, Ballard is an example of how a team might not use all the cap space it has available, even when it's a significant amount. There is a floor that teams must meet when it comes to cash spending, but that's not the same as utilizing cap space.

But you can take comfort in knowing that the Broncos have cap space to work with if they decide to make particular moves in the weeks to come. Denver still has the flexibility to improve the roster as it sees fit. The only question to ask is what moves might be coming and where.

We'll likely know more in the days to come because it wouldn't surprise me if Paton is still looking at available free agents. And when the 2021 NFL draft arrives on April 29, we'll definitely see the Broncos making new roster acquisitions.

Salary cap space

As of March 17, 2021, the Broncos are projected to have $32,698,008 in cap space for 2021.

The Broncos rolled over $17.8 million in 2020 cap space.

March 10 update: The salary cap has been set at $182.5 million.

The Denver Broncos were among NFL’s bottom 10 in scoring offense and scoring defense and finished the 2020 season with a very representative 5-11 record. They lost their best defensive player, Von Miller, for the entire season due to an ankle injury suffered prior to Week 1. Offensively, the Broncos have a lot of pieces in place to be an entertaining group. The questions still remain, however, of if they have the right quarterback to go with it. Second-year QB Drew Lock tied for the league lead with 15 interceptions despite starting only 13 games.

The Broncos have just shy of $19 million of cap space available. Conversations of who to keep and who to cut will focus on the defensive side of the ball.

The NFL powered through its 2020 season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The league played without fans in most stadiums, and limited fans in a handful of locations. The decrease in gate revenue is going to result in a decrease in money shared between the 32 teams. This in turn means the salary cap has been decreased. The NFL has announced an official salary cap of $182.5 million, which is sure to result in some tough choices for many teams.

All salary cap information below comes courtesy of the NFLPA Public Salary Cap Report.

Notable contracts

Before covering the defense’s needs, let’s look at running back, where Phillip Lindsay is slated to be a restricted free agent, and Melvin Gordon III has one year left on his deal. MGIII looks like he is over the hill even though he is only 27. Cutting him would come with a $6.5 million amount of dead money but also save $2.5 million. It would be an easier decision if the Broncos knew they could depend on Lindsay. But the 5-foot-8 back missed five games due to injuries this year and hobbled through a few others. Unless the Broncos address this position in the draft, Gordon is probably back for another year in Denver.

They are some big cap numbers for defensive players at the top of the Broncos’ payroll. Edge rusher Von Miller is scheduled to count a little more than $22 million against the cap. Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey (about $11.8 million) and cornerback A.J. Bouye ($13.375 million) are also coming off of injury-marred seasons. Releasing those three players would save about $43 million. Bouye is the easiest to predict of who will be cut; a late-season PED suspension will carry over through the first two weeks of the 2021 campaign. He’s all but destined to head elsewhere. Both Bouye and Casey have no guaranteed money left on their deals. Miller, who is entering a contract year, carries a bit more than $4 million in dead money if released.

The Broncos could also lessen Miller’s cap number by giving him an extension, basically making the 31-year-old a possible Bronco for life. Although, considering what is swirling around Miller off the field right now, the team should probably hold off on that new contract for a bit.

In terms of in-house free agents, priority No. 1 should be re-signing Justin Simmons. The 27-year-old was a standout safety in 2020.

12 Broncos players with the biggest salary cap hits in 2021

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton has already made two salary cap-motivated moves this offseason, cutting cornerback A.J. Bouye and defensive lineman Jurrell Casey (and six other players).

Paton created more than $22 million in additional cap space by cutting Bouye and Casey and Denver now has the fifth-most cap space in the NFL. Here’s a quick look at the team’s 12 players with the biggest cap hits this year (keep in mind that outside linebacker Von Miller and safety Kareem Jackson have contract options for the 2021 season).

Each player’s cap hit was provided courtesy of OverTheCap.com.
