1. Low Fluid

Low or no transmission fluid is one of the most common reasons that a transmission will slip.  Transmission fluid lasts so much longer than oil that, often people don&#;t look at it at all. 

Once it gets critically low, the transmission will begin slipping, as there is no longer any way for it to move the engine&#;s power to the rear wheels.  During this stage, extreme damage is being done to your Suburban&#;s transmission as it slips.  You need to fill the fluid back up to the proper level right away.


2. Bad or Burnt Fluid

Transmission fluid can deal with a lot of abuse.  That being said, it can go bad and will no longer be able to do its job.  Check it and look at the color.  Most manufacturers use red fluid.  This transmission fluid color chart will help you determine if the fluid is bad.  Black fluid is an obvious sign that the fluid has been burnt.


3. Wrong Fluid

If you&#;ve recently serviced (or had serviced) your transmission, double check that the right fluid was put in.  If it wasn&#;t, you&#;ll need to flush it and start over.


4. Transmission Bands

An automatic transmission uses bands to link its gears together.  When these bands go bad the transmission will begin to slip.  Sometimes they can be adjusted.  Most of the time they&#;ll just need replaced.


5. Gears

Over time, the gears in a transmission can just wear out.  When this happens, shifts will get rougher.


6. Solenoid(s)

Your Suburban&#;s transmission uses solenoids to control the amount of pressure going through the transmission.  This affects shift firmness, whether it even shifts at all, and can make the transmission slip without enough pressure.


7. Torque Converter

If you feel like the transmission is only slipping a few hundred RPM on the highway, it may not be the transmission slipping at all.  It could be the torque converter.  

Modern torque converters use locking clutches to create a true connection between the engine and the transmission.  This helps fuel mileage.  When they don&#;t lock, the engine RPM will be higher on the highway.  Torque converters don&#;t typically lock until they are in overdrive or drive, or your Suburban reaches a certain speed.

In March , General Motors recalled certain Chevrolet Silverado Light Duty Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab series and model year Suburban and Tahoe; GMC model year Sierra Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab Series and model year Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6L80 6-Speed Automatic Transmission. The recalled trucks may have a transmission oil cooler line that is not securely seated in the fitting.

Consequence &#;
If the line is not securely seated and transmission oil leaks from the fitting, the oil could contact a hot surface and cause a vehicle fire.

Remedy &#;
Dealers were instructed to inspect the transmission oil cooler line connection and repair the vehicles, as needed, free of charge. Owners may contact Chevrolet at (refer to the Chevrolet Silverado recall ) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at (refer to recall 14V).

Problem &#; Trucks equipped with the 6-speed 6L80 or 6L90 transmission may experience no forward or reverse engagement, or slipping between the gears.

Solution &#; This problem could be caused by a cracked or split transmission filter. If this is the case, the transmission pump should be disassembled and inspected for possible damage. Inspect for any of the following conditions: – scored pump rotor or pump vanes – scored pump cover or pump rotor pocket – cracked pump slide.

The transmission should also be evaluated for any possible distress to the clutches. GM’s testing and analysis found that split or damaged filters may be caused by a damaged transmission pump. This can send a high pressure fluid spike down the filter neck on a cold start, resulting in the filter body cracking or the filter seam splitting. The filter is not defective and this is not a filter quality issue. Important: Do not replace the filter without inspecting the pump. Failure to inspect the pump and clutches could lead to a repeat of this condition.

Solution &#; This transmission problem may be caused by a cracked / R clutch housing.

TSB NA &#; Delayed engagement after sitting with the engine off
Problem &#; Drivers may experience a pronounced delay in forward or reverse gear engagement after shifting from Park. This condition typically occurs when the vehicle has been sitting for several hours with the engine off (like overnight).
Solution &#; In order to correct this common 8L90 transmission problem, a new stator shaft support assembly will have to be installed.

PIPA &#; Harsh shifts
Problem &#; One of the more common 8L90 transmission problems is excessively hard or abrupt gear changes.
Solution &#; The TCM may need to be recalibrated with the latest control software. It could also be caused by one or more of the clutch fill times not being learned by the TCM. In which case, the Service Fast Learn (SFL) procedure will have to be performed.

TSB &#; NA &#; Erratic shifting behavior
Problem &#; Drivers may experience harsh shifts, delayed shifts, unexpected downshift, stuck in a gear and/or hesitation to shift. The following DTC codes may also be set: P, P, P, P, P
Solution &#; These problems may be caused by a programming error in the TCM, which will require a software update.

Problem &#; A common 4L60E transmission problem is an intermittent hard shift, often accompanied by engine bogging. This condition can be caused by the torque convertor clutch applying during the shift.
Solution &#; To remedy the problem, the wiring harness needs to be inspected from the transmission case connector to the rear of the engine on the driver side. It&#;s possible that the wires for the TCC solenoid and pressure control solenoid have become frayed on a body seam. If this is the case, the wiring will need to be repaired, and the harness repositioned.

Customer Saves $4, on Suburban 6L80 Transmission

The customer owned a Chevrolet Suburban , 4wd with , miles. They were experiencing what they described as “chattering sensations” or hiccups during cruising speeds. These transmission problems were getting progressively more significant over the course of months, and eventually, the customer was concerned, that the vehicle would not move at all. This customer took the Suburban in to their regular automotive, general repair specialist.

After looking at the vehicle, that general repair shop contacted Tri-City Transmission and Auto Repair asking for a price on a whole transmission. They said, "the transmission is smoked, how much."

We instructed that shop that it's rare to see the Chevy Suburban transmission fail like they described, and we would recommend a transmission specialist properly diagnose it. We felt, based off the described symptoms, more than likely they were not describing a failed transmission but a torque converter lockup issue.

The next phone call we got was from the actual customer who got our name from a friend of theirs. The customer indicated that they were quoted more than $6, to replace their transmission from that same automotive generalist that called us.

We indicated it was an unreasonable price for that transmission and they probably did not need a transmission anyway. The customer decided to come down to visit us. We gave him a tour of our shop and repair process. From there, one or our technicians road tested the vehicle with the customer to verify the symptoms, and they left the vehicle for our Level 1 Diagnostic process.

A handful of hours later, we called the customer with the good news; all they needed was a torque converter clutch, and it was $4, less than their original quote from their automotive generalist.

This type of transaction is a regular occurrence at Tri-City Transmission and Auto Repair. This is especially true when it comes to the Chevy Suburban transmission. It is a great transmission, and internal or total transmission failure is rarely the case.
However, most automotive generalists don't understand transmissions. All they generally know how to do is replace the transmission. Unfortunately, they don't know what they don't know so they honestly pass out bad advice, well-intended though, it may be.

Transmission Background Information:

This Chevy Suburban transmission replaced its predecessors, 4L60E and 4L80E. It utilizes the transmission control module inside the transmission. Hardly does the transmission itself fail. We regularly handle transmission control issues and rarely transmission failure issues.

GM did a good job designing this transmission. It is in our estimation that in 70% of the time this transmission is replaced, it was replaced in error or could have been fixed for a lot less money.

This is especially true at a dealership as they do not generally repair transmissions in-house; they got out of that business years ago, and they don't necessarily know how, so they don't. Although, sometimes they will give you the impression they can. The model transmission is found in Suburban’s, Tahoe’s, GMC and Chevrolet Silverado Trucks, as well as G series vans.

I have had 2 Suburban in the last 5 years and the transmission failed right around k miles on both. They have a serious issue with it but have managed to get away with it as there has been no class action against it. My Suburban broke down around 96k miles and my Suburban at k. I'm sure if this is further researched then 90% of the these models must have reported the same problem around k. I'm looking forward to sue gm over this, as after spending over us$ 00 on making payments on 2 cars and don't have a car that I can trust for long trips, as it always happened when I was with my family on a long trip and had to spend thousands in making alternative arrangements to get home safely. Before my last trip, I sent my Suburban at the dealership for a k miles service at miles where I was in warranty where they checked and said everything looks fine for the trip and did a basic oil change with inspection but after a week of touring the transmission boke down at around miles. Where I had to shell out $ in total as the car went out of warranty in a week time. The break down is $ for repairs, $ for shipping the car, $ in car rental and hotel, $ broken windshield in transit. Both of my cars have always been to dealership for the service and periodic maintenance but its their defected transmission that would never hold up. I'm looking for people who would want to make a class action lawsuit against this and bring justice to all owners. I have the VIN for both of my Suburban where one was bought used with only 8k miles on it with extended warranty and the other was brand new.

The transmission shifted very hard into 2nd gear. When I came to a stop and went to go the vehicle would not shift into second gear. It would prceed into third gear after the engine would rev up to a higher rpm. I contacted several transmission shops and a dealership. They all said that I lost the 2nd/4th gear intemediate shaft which also included the reverse gear also. This is on a r4 transmisson. They all said gm knew about the problem but would not do a recall on that model year because of the extenive use of that tranmission in all of their vehicles . They said that almost all of the transmission had the faulty intermediate shaft. This could cause a serious problem for some vehicle owners if the transmission failed at an inopportune time, especially in an emergency that they had to reverse quickly. I had the transmission replaced at a local shop at a very high expense. I thought I would submit this due to the amount of vehicles that used this transmissionin that year and for the safety of the owners.
