    E60 Sports seats into E39?

Does anyone know if the sports seats out of an E60 (not M5) would bolt into an E39 and then function....perhaps with minor wiring changes. Alternatively did the E39 have the sports seats with the split back rests etc at any point

I can't answer your question regarding E60 seats. My guess would be that they are not a direct swap, but that's entirely a guess going on that I've never seen it done before. With that being said, why would you want them? The E39 sport seats are fantastic. In my opinion, they're both more comfortable and more supportive than the E60 sport seats.

As for the second part of your question; no. The E39 was never sold with sport comfort seats. They were only available on the E38 sport models. Good luck finding a set for sale in Australia.

If you're interested, I have spare set of normal comfort seats (with the split back and lumbar support) that I would be happy to sell you.

    Would the seats fit...

Thanks for the reply ...do you think they might go into an E21 Baur Cabriolet?
how much are you wanting for them...any chance of a pic or two

Do you mean will the E60 seats go into an E21 or will my comfort seats go into an E21?

I doubt either will be a direct bolt in, but anything is possible. Depends how much work you're wiling to put in.

The E39 has the mounting points built into the rails, so I suppose if you're willing to drill through the floor of your car and there is nothing in the way, you could put them in anything. They're electric though and I'm almost certain the plugs will be different to anything in an E21, if the e21 even has electric seats in the first place.

The issue I see is...when you jump generations...not only is the design architecture different...but you also have a different wiring set-up.

The generation prior to the e38/e39/e46/e53...used a lot of direct wiring...then in our generation, BMW went to the Can/Diagnostic/I, K, M, P communication bus that allowed communication between not only components on the same bus...but it allowed communication to pass from "GATEWAY modules to other modules...thus reducing the amount of wiring required in the car.

Now, the new generation BMWs use the CAN, MOST, Byteflight, and LIN communication bus set-up (probably can find more info about it on Wikipedia or google). So, more than likely, the seats from an e60 are going to require special wiring etc, since they will no doubt not be able to be plug-n-play and communicate over the now antiquated communication bus in the e39:

(if my grammar, spelling, or sentence structure is screwed up....don't blame me...it's my dang bluetooth keyboard...I try to catch & correct the mistakes...but I may not catch all of them.)

So in other words you may potentially breach communication to other systems ?!

Actually you can just find the positive and ground them, it can work as a simple electric seat without the memory function. For that it didnt require the bus systems.

Having a new-looking pair of E60 seats, destined, I hope for my nice E32 iL, are you saying all they need is power to operate? I tried that with no result, but the wires chosen were an educated (or not) guess. My seats even came with the male-plugged pigtail wiring stub. I've been looking for a solution to this for a long time and am fine with non-memory power seats!

Don't guess at wiring. Use WDS. It takes a while to get used to but you should be able to find full color coded wiring diagrams for the seats.

Goodness. geargrinder, thanks! I hope that ends my search for adequate wiring diagram(s) for this, after many, many months of delay, doing other projects. These newer seats should eliminate my frau's complaints about the old and not so comfy original seat (hard, cracked, split leather, et.al.).

I apologize if anyone thinks the thread was hijacked. Having owned and enjoyed my '89 735iL since 1994, a car with untouched engine in 270k+ miles, with newly redone self-leveling rear suspension, it was my first and still is my favorite BMW of all, despite having owned many others, including the departing 745Li. IMO opinion, it was the marques best ever.

    Thank you, thank you.

There's a Bright Red 850i, the 745Li and an R1100RS absent in that, but.....

BMW Seats & Seat Accessories for BMW E60 M5 S85 5.0L

Clear BMW chassisChange Your Vehicle

Whether you're building a track-only speed machine, show car, or ultra-serious street ride the seats can make an awesome upgrade. Aside from the obvious safety considerations with a seat, there are few upgrades that can have more of an impact in your driving experience. Sport or Race seats envelope and grip the driver's body, holding him/her in place even under extreme driving situations. When strapped into a seat with the appropriate harnesses you can become an integrated part of the car. Without the sliding around of stock seats you can have greater confidance and focus on the act of driving. Turner Motorsport is an authorized Recaro dealer and we use them in all of our racecars and high-level tuner project cars. We offer the full range of Recaro tuner and racing seats with mounts and adapters and other accessories.

If you want fore-aft adjustment on your Recaro seat you will need a set of sliders. These are the genuine Recaro sliders that are some of the finest quality that we have seen. The sliders fit between the vehicle adapter and the seat brackets. There are two types depending on how your floor adapters work - without tabs and with tabs.

Recaro Seat Slider types -
Without Tabs - offers the lowest possible seating position - the total height of the sliders is 22mm (7/8"); the sliders are sandwiched between the floor mount and seat; the bolts install to the floor mount perpendicular to the ground; works with flat Macht Schnell or VAC style floor mounts only.
With Tabs - the sliders have tabs on each end with three height positions; the positions allow height and rake adjustments but means it's taller than the version without tabs - total height with the tabs is 58mm (2.25"); the tabs mean the mounting bolts install parallel to the ground; some floor mounts require the tab style (Wedge Engineering for example).

The Recaro sliders are all steel - pulling the handle moves teeth on two tracks which is more secure and stable than a single track. This set of sliders has the bar on the inside of the track (the most common for BMW fitments).

Sold per seat.

These little guys are one of our favorite final touches on a race car build. After years of requests, we now are able to supply these for more than just our race team's use. These aluminum collars bolt on your roll cage's harness bar (or any bar for that matter) and help keep your seat belt harnesses from sliding on the bar. You can use just one pair to accomplish this, or 2 pairs (4 collars total) for the best looking and functioning install. The beauty of these collars (besides being lightweight and looking clean) is that they can be adjusted from side to side, which is convenient if you change you seat or belt configuration. They can also be used for other applications as well, such as taming that helmet net strap. If you're looking for a clean, professional looking solution, these are a superb final touch. As used on our own Championship winning TMS E46 and E90 race cars.

We offer these guide collars in two sizes: for 1.5" OD roll bar tubing or for 1.75" OD roll bar tubing (choose your size below). Check your cage tubing diameter especially if your car was built in Europe as they used metric tubing sizes. If you need a metric size, contact us. Also measure with paint applied, not bare tubing. These are sold by the pair, so be sure to modifying your quantity below (or in the cart) if you need them for both seats.
