Written By Timothy Dale

Published Sep. 15, 2021

Noisy apartments and busy homes can make it difficult to unwind after a hard day at work, but replacing these stressful noises with the quiet, peaceful sound of a water fountain is a great way to bring a sense of relaxation into your home. Not only does the sound of water bubbling, burbling, and flowing help to put people at ease, but a water fountain can also be used to improve the aesthetic of a room or even add to the natural beauty of the yard.

The best water fountain for your home should be able to function in the environment of your choosing, so if the goal is to set up a large water fountain outdoors, then you will need to check to make sure that the water fountain can be used outdoors without any issues. Check this list of top products to get a better idea of the possible options available to you and keep reading for more information on how to choose the best water fountain for indoor or outdoor use.

How We Picked the Products

Owning and maintaining multiple water fountains over the years, as well as extensive product research, helped to select the top water fountains from more than 40 different potential options. The primary factors that affected the selection included the type of water fountain, the style, material, and overall quality of the product, with an emphasis on the aesthetic appeal in order to highlight unique designs.

The type of water fountain helped to split the potential products into categories for a more balanced comparison between similar items. Also, whether a water fountain water was intended for indoor or outdoor use made a big difference because the sizes and materials typically differed significantly. When it came to material, preference was given to high-quality materials, like stainless steel and glass, although it was also noted that cheaper materials, like plastic and resin, were well-suited to create more affordable water fountains. The aesthetic appeal of each water fountain was more difficult to compare because people have their own preferences when it comes to style. So we considered top-quality products from a range of styles.

  • Dimensions: 15 by 15 by 32 inches
  • Material: Fiberglass and resin
  • Type: Indoors or outdoors, freestanding

  • Rustic style and appearance
  • Is a suitable water fountain indoors or outdoors
  • Compact, freestanding design

  • Fiberglass and resin are vulnerable to damage

Whether your goal is to improve the appearance of the yard or set up a relaxing water fountain inside, the Glenville Water Pump Cascading Water Fountain is suited for the task. It’s designed with a sturdy fiberglass and resin construction made for enduring the wind and rain. The fountain also features a detailed brick catch-basin, an old-fashioned water pump, as well as two simulated wooden buckets.

The water is released through the old-fashioned water pump at the top of the fountain and it flows down into the wooden buckets. The buckets form multiple tiers that direct the flow of the water into the simulated brick catch-basin, where it is pumped back up to the top of the fountain to continue the cycle. This attractive water fountain can be set up as either a freestanding fountain or a large tabletop fountain, though the design would also blend perfectly with the natural growth of a vibrant garden.

Why It Made the Cut: Compact and elegant, this tabletop water fountain is an ideal option for improving the ambience of a room without taking up too much space.

  • Dimensions: 8.1 by 7.25 by 8.25 inches
  • Material: Plastic.
  • Type: Indoors, tabletop

  • Affordable price
  • Ornate aesthetic design
  • Small size is suitable for side tables

  • Built-in pump motor can be loud

Set up the HoMedics tabletop water fountain on a kitchen counter, the dining table, or in the bedroom to fill the room with the soothing sound of flowing water. The compact size of just 8.1 by 7.25 by 8.25 inches is suitable for almost any area around the home and can be set up in a bathroom or home office.

This affordable water fountain is made for indoor use and the small size makes it ideal for use as a tabletop aesthetic. The water travels through the three tiers and down into a catch-basin bowl. The simple but elegant design along with the natural beauty of the river rocks in the catch basin improve the appearance of any room. Keep in mind, though, that the plastic and ceramic parts might be damaged if the fountain is dropped or knocked over onto a hard surface. Also, it should be noted that the motor on the pump may run at a loud volume if the fountain and rocks are not washed before the first use.

Best Tabletop:Kenroy Home 51008SLCOP Spillway Fountains

The Kenroy Home 51008SLCOP Spillway Fountains are the best tabletop.

Earthy Slate and Copper

The rectangular slate frame of this tabletop water fountain features five copper tiers that direct and control the flow of water to the rocky catch basin at the fountain’s base. Kenroy Home

Check Price

Why It Made the Cut: This tabletop water fountain by Kenroy Home features a simple vertical waterway framed by slate comprising five, solid copper tiers.

  • Dimensions: 10 by 6 by 19 inches
  • Material: Slate, copper, plastic
  • Type: Indoors, tabletop

  • Compact base is suitable for smaller tabletops
  • Tall, vertical fountain stands out in most rooms
  • Five-tier design enhances its visual appeal

  • The pump does not have an on/off switch

One of the problems with typical tabletop water fountains is that they need to be small to fit comfortably on most tabletops, but the smaller size also diminishes the aesthetic presence of the fountain within the room. The Kenroy Home tabletop water fountain overcomes this difficulty with a 19-inch height and a vertical waterway that pours down five tiers before ending on the river rocks in the catch-basin. Despite the fountain’s height, the base of the water fountain is a mere 10 by 6 inches, ensuring that it will fit on most tabletops without a problem.

This fountain is intended for indoor use, though the slate and copper design reflect the earthiness of nature. However, it should be noted that some of the fountain’s construction is plastic painted to look like slate, and this fountain does not have an on/off switch, so it needs to be unplugged each time the user wants to turn it off.

Best Freestanding:Alpine Corporation MLT102 Mirror Waterfall Fountain

The Alpine Corporation MLT102 Mirror Waterfall Fountain is the best freestanding water fountain.

Cascading Mirrored Waterfall

The stainless steel base and frame ensure the balance and durability of this freestanding water fountain, so users don’t need to worry about it being knocked over. Alpine Corporation

Why It Made the Cut: Make a statement with this impressive 72-inch mirror waterfall fountain that can be set up in the living room, bedroom, or even as a primary focal point in the dining room.

  • Dimensions: 24 inches by 10 inches by 72 inches
  • Material: Stainless steel and mirrored glass.
  • Type: Indoors, freestanding

  • Outstanding mirrored glass aesthetic
  • Strong and durable stainless steel construction
  • Integrated spotlight projects onto the water as it falls

  • The large size may not be suitable for some rooms
  • Expensive

Create space in the living room, dining room, den, or even your master bedroom for this impressive, beautiful water fountain. The well-constructed base and frame are made from painted stainless steel, which blends into most home decors. This frames a tall sheet of mirrored glass that allows it to quickly become the focal point in almost any room. The water cascades down the mirrored glass, creating a waterfall appearance that is illuminated by the integrated spotlight, which helps draw attention to the peaceful burbling of water as it flows.

This indoor Alpine Corporation MLT102 Mirror Waterfall Fountain has a sleek, modern design that is suitable for an office or your home. The large size of the fountain does make it less suitable for smaller indoor spaces. The price tag for this exquisite water fountain may make it unaffordable for those on a tight budget.

Best Outdoor:Peaktop 201601PT Water 4 Tiered Bowls Waterfall Fountains

The Peaktop 201601PT Water 4 Tiered Bowls Waterfall Fountain is the best outdoor.

Stone Garden Accent

The simulated stone design fits well with wooden decks, stone patios, and the vibrant colors of a spring garden. Peaktop

Check Price

Why It Made the Cut: With built-in LED lights that enhance its appeal, this freestanding water fountain is ideal for highlighting the home garden.

  • Dimensions: 16.25 inches by 15.5 inches by 33 inches
  • Material: Fiberglass and resin.
  • Type: Indoors or outdoors, freestanding

  • Built-in LED lights
  • Install the water fountain indoors or outdoors
  • Simulated stone is ideal for outdoor settings

  • Fiberglass and resin may be vulnerable to damage

Constructed of fiberglass and resin, the Peaktop waterfall fountain is resistant to wind, rain, and sun, so you can set it up on the back deck, the front patio, or right in the garden. The freestanding fountain will quickly fill the yard with the sounds of bubbling water as it flows down four tiers from the top of the fountain. Each tier is designed to look like a stone bowl with spouts that direct the flow of water to the next level. These bowls appear to be sitting on top of stone ledges. However, the entire fountain is one piece, and since fiberglass and resin are not as heavy as real stone, the fountain may be vulnerable to damage if it’s knocked over.

The waterfall fountain is easy to assemble, and once you fill it and plug it in, it will be ready to begin making the beautiful sounds of water. It also has built-in LED lights that illuminate the water and enhance the overall aesthetic appeal, especially at night.

Water fountains are available in many different shapes, sizes, and designs, so it’s important to understand the different product factors involved before deciding on the best water fountain for your home.

You’ll want to determine where you want to set up the water fountain and whether you plan to use it indoors or outdoors.

  • Tabletop water fountains are usually designed to be smaller so that they may  sit comfortably on a countertop or table. These are generally intended for use  inside the home, although there are a few that are intended for outdoor use.
  • Wall-mounted water fountains are not as common as tabletop or freestanding fountains because they need to be attached to the wall of the home. However, once installed, these fountains create an appealing water feature that makes the home stand out.
  • Freestanding water fountains don’t need to be placed on a table because they are large enough to stand directly on the floor or ground. Different models can be used indoors or outdoors, though most freestanding water fountains are best suited for outdoor use due to the larger fountain dimensions.
  • Indoor water fountains are typically made of lighter weight materials, like plastic, though some products may be constructed of stainless steel or even glass. Water fountains that are designated for indoor use can be damaged if they are used outdoors.
  • Outdoor water fountains can range in size from small, tabletop designs to large, decorative focal points for the entire yard. Unlike indoor water fountains, these fountains can be used either indoors or outdoors as long as the fountain fits, although size certainly may be an issue for larger fountains.

Style and Design

When it comes to style and design, it’s necessary to consider the size of the water fountain, compared to the area where it will be installed. While a water fountain can look great, even in a small room, it’s necessary for the fountain to have enough space to function properly without splashing objects that might be damaged. Typically, tabletop water fountains have a small size and lightweight design, making them ideal for bedrooms, dens, and even bathrooms. However, freestanding water fountains are better for the living room, dining room, and outdoors.

The aesthetic style and design are among the most important factors when choosing a fountain. Do you want the water fountain to blend the background of your home? Or would you prefer the fountain become a focal point for your garden or home? Choose a fountain that matches your sense of style and your budget.

Water fountains are made from a variety of different materials including resin, fiberglass, bamboo, stainless steel, stone, concrete, and plastic. Resin and fiberglass are great for outdoor use because they are weather-resistant, but stone and concrete are also used for outdoor water fountains because of their outstanding durability and natural resistance to rain, sleet, and snow. However, natural stone or concrete fountains will cost and weigh significantly more than resin and fiberglass do.

Bamboo is an inexpensive material that is great for a home water fountain and naturally accents the beauty of the yard. Stainless steel fountains have a sleek, modern look and are weather-resistant and lightweight, making it the ideal substitute for stone or concrete. If an inexpensive water fountain is your goal, then plastic may be a good choice since it will not be very expensive and can be molded to look like more elegant materials, such as stone or brick.

Q: Do water fountains attract insects?

Most pests that may be attracted to the fountain—such as mosquitoes—are usually interested in standing water, so if the fountain is regularly in use, then it should not attract them.

Q: Is there a way to change the sound of the water fountain?

The flow of water through the water fountain and over the multiple tiers can create a soft burbling sound that’s pleasant and relaxing. By changing the amount of water in the fountain, the sound can be adjusted, allowing users to customize the sound of the fountain to their desired preference.

Q: Can a water fountain run for 24 hours a day?

Yes, in fact most water fountains are designed for this exact purpose. By leaving the water fountain running, even when you aren’t home, the movement of the water helps to deter insects and prevent stagnation, which can lead to algae growth and mineral buildup.

Q: How do you clean a water fountain?

Most water fountains can be cleaned by draining the water and using a gentle scrub brush to remove dirt, algae, and minerals from the surface of the fountain. Consider using a mixture of hot water and vinegar to help remove tough grime, but always make sure to refer to the manufacturer’s directions before beginning to clean to ensure that the cleaning solution is not harmful to the material.

Final Thoughts

The rustic look and quality construction set the Glenville Water Fountain apart from its competitors, but the elegance and simplicity of the HoMedics Tabletop Fountain cannot be understated.

The 9 Best Water Fountains of 2021

Decorative water fountains come in a range of styles, including modern, contemporary, rustic, minimalist, and traditional. Before buying a fixture, consider the existing decor of your space. If you're planning to place it outside, make sure it'll complement your landscaping, pavers, and outdoor furniture. When placing a fountain indoors, look for an option that won't overwhelm your space and will go with your furniture, decorative accents, and color scheme.

A majority of the water fountains you'll find on the market today are made of polyresin, a supremely durable substance made of polyester and resin. The sturdy material is resistant to weather damage, rust, and fading, making it ideal for outdoor use. Other popular materials are ceramic, fiberglass, and concrete, which are also resilient and designed to hold up outdoors, although they can be more expensive depending on the size and style.

If you're placing your fountain outdoors, you probably have more space to work with, but make sure you have enough room to fit it in your garden or on your porch, patio, or deck. Tabletop fixtures tend to be smaller, but the surface needs to be large enough that it won't fall off. Mounted fountains don't take up any floor or counter space, but you'll need to ensure you've got an open wall that's sturdy enough to hold it. And of course, make sure you have an easily accessible outlet, as most modern fountains are electric.

Amazing Cascading Water Fountain Garden Tour

Buying guide for best outdoor fountains

Whether you currently spend a ton of time in your outdoor living space or want to spend more, an outdoor fountain can be a fun and relaxing investment. An outdoor fountain can serve as a focal point and meditative element for your garden or deck, tying other elements of the space together while adding motion and sound that attracts birds and butterflies.

From simple solar-powered floating fountains to intricately sculpted fountains that resemble works of art, there are a wide variety of fountains available to choose from. Aspects of an outdoor fountain to consider include materials, size, power source, and features such as pumps, lighting, and controls. No matter what type of backyard you have, there’s a style and size to accommodate your space and complement your flower garden. Read our buying guide to learn more about outdoor fountains, and be sure to check out our recommendations when you’re ready to buy.

Key considerations

As an outdoor fountain is first and foremost a decorative element, its appearance is a key consideration, and there are a variety of styles. Nature-themed fountains may resemble a real waterfall with rocks and blend in better in a garden setting. A more ornamental or traditional fountain functions better as a focal point in a garden. There are also whimsical fountains that feature water flowing pot to pot. Others resemble works of art — sculpted figures that are more statue than fountain.

Appearance depends on both your personal preference and how you plan to use the fountain. Some manufacturers provide you with a variety of color choices, giving you even more options to consider.

As it is exposed to the elements, an outdoor fountain should be built to last. The actual materials that go into a fountain — be it fiberglass, poly resin, or cast stone — can vary considerably, but in the end they should all have the same goal: keeping your fountain in one piece and looking great for years.

Note that while some fountains may resemble stone, there are few that are made from actual stone. Composite materials that resemble stone are often used, providing you with the appearance of stone without its weight.

Size and weight

Know how much your fountain weighs before ordering it. Some are under a pound, while others are heavy enough that moving them around may be difficult. The majority of fountains are in the 20 to 40 pound range. A heavier fountain can be an issue if you need it to be more portable.

Similarly, the size of outdoor fountains can vary considerably, from under a foot in height to several feet tall. Size is important to consider for all fountains, whether portable or stationary. A large fountain in a compact space may overwhelm the space, while something like a tabletop fountain in a large garden tends to disappear. Carefully consider where you will be placing your fountain when deciding what size to buy.

Power source

While some fountains are solar-powered, the majority are powered via an electrical cord. With an electric fountain, you don’t need to worry whether the sun is shining — the fountain runs during dreary days, and even after dark. The downside of an electric fountain is that you need to either place the fountain near an outlet or plan to run an extension cord to it.

So long as it’s receiving decent light, a solar fountain has no such placement considerations.

Some outdoor fountains arrive fully assembled, while others (particularly larger fountains) require a fair amount of time and effort to put together. Most outdoor fountains usually require some light assembly before you can plug them in, but this may be something as simple as snaking hosing through the fountain and plugging it into the pump.

The pump is the primary way for water to circulate through the fountain. Pumps vary in terms of the number of gallons per minute they move water, with larger pumps usually reserved for larger fountains. Larger pumps may move more water per minute but tend to be louder when running.

When considering a fountain, be sure it includes a pump. The pump should provide a strong, steady flow. Check whether the water flow is adjustable — being able to regulate the flow solves problems such as splashing or anemic performance.

Number of tiers

The tiers of a fountain are the levels where water is collected before falling to the next. Some fountains only have one tier, while others have three, four, or more. Generally speaking, the more tiers, the more water movement the fountain has and the more water sound it produces.

While not standard, some fountains feature LED lighting either within the fountain pools or illuminating the falling water. Some have only one color of LED, while others offer a variety of colors. If you entertain frequently at night or just enjoy hanging outside after dark, consider a fountain with LED lights.

Controls on an outdoor fountain are usually few. Some fountains have an on/off switch, while others require you to unplug the fountain whenever you want to stop the water flow. A control to regulate the water flow can be found on some fountains.

"Add a few drops of a pet-friendly fountain algaecide every week to keep your fountain free from algae and mosquito larva. "

Outdoor fountain prices

Outdoor fountains range in price from around $20 up to several hundred dollars. The average price is between $150 and $250.

Inexpensive: At the low end of the price range you can find simple solar-powered fountains with few bells and whistles and minimal water flow.

Mid-range: Mid-price fountains are usually in the tabletop size.

Expensive: Larger fountains can be found at higher price points. They’re capable of pumping a much higher rate of water. Pricier fountains are often more artistically designed with a better build. They offer more advanced features such as LED lighting.

Did you know?

Outdoor water fountains date back to ancient Crete and Greece, where they were not just decorative but also a valuable source of drinking water for local populations.

  • Verify that the fountain either ships with everything you need to assemble it, or know what you may additionally need. Some manufacturers require you to buy parts such as hosing before you’re able to use the fountain.

  • Avoid putting fish, plants, or anything else within the fountain water bowls. Both fish and plants produce waste that can clog hosing and affect the performance of your fountain.

  • Simple solar-powered floating fountains often include suctioned feet on the bottom so you can mount the fountain to a surface if you’d rather run the fountain stationary instead of letting it float around.

  • When deciding where to place your outdoor fountain, turn your gaze skyward. Any trees or other vegetation above the fountain may drop leaves and create a cleaning problem.

  • While you can bury conduit to power your electric fountain, an extension cord is much easier. Be sure to buy one that’s recommended for extended outdoor use.

  • Outdoor fountains should be cleaned regularly. If you notice dirt and grime building up on your fountain, unplug it and scrub it down with a little soapy water and a soft-to-medium brush. Rinse the fountain carefully, refill it, and plug it back in.

  • Splashing can be a problem with some fountains. Know how much your fountain may splash, particularly if you plan to locate it on a covered deck or other area where water exposure might be an issue.

Q. Where should I locate my outdoor fountain?
A. Before you purchase a fountain, consider where it will go. Solar floating fountains obviously need to be placed in direct sunlight, but freestanding fountains have any number of options when it comes to placement.

If the fountain is for a more formal garden, consider making it a focal point in the center of the garden. For less formal settings, the fountain may be more suitable located along a fence, pathway, or near outdoor furnishings where those relaxing can enjoy the sound of the water.

The fountain’s type and size enter into play when deciding where to place it. Feng Shui offers some advice: wherever you place it, the water should always be flowing in the direction of your house.

Q. Do outdoor fountains require any plumbing work to install?
A. Generally not. Fountains are typically self-contained, so you’re responsible for filling it and topping off the water level when it starts running low.

Q. Should I bring my fountain in for the winter?
A. If your fountain is light enough, this is your best option regardless of how severe your winter is. In areas where the temperatures drop below freezing, this is especially important, as freezing water can damage delicate fountain parts and burst hoses. At the very least — and particularly for heavier fountains — you should fully drain and cover it to protect it against winter’s harsh elements.

You guessed it, these guys are intended to be placed on a wall. They’re an ideal choice if space is limited but you still want a water feature in your yard.

Helpful Hints: Location and Construction

While some fountains can be powered by a solar panel, many have electricity delivered by a traditional wired supply. This is an important aspect of deciding where you’re going to place your selection.

Also look around and think about what leaf and yard debris might fall into the water and get caught up inside the drains.

Coleman 50-Foot 14/3 Extension Cord

It’s always best to hire a professional electrician for these kinds of jobs; they have the years of practice and firsthand knowledge of safety precautions that the internet can’t readily provide.

Electricity can be deadly, so always err on the side of safety!

If you’re using an extension cord and are not electing to bury conduit, be sure to purchase a reliable and high-quality extension cord.

Coleman makes a great product that I’ve employed for a variety of prolonged outdoor uses, and it’s available on Amazon.

Selecting the Right Option for Your Space

The type that you will select is an important choice, and there are three basic models: tabletop, wall-mounted, or freestanding.

While table fountains are shorter in stature, suited to fit on a table or a stand, wall types may be attached to a permanent wall. Freestanding models are taller and larger, designed to stand on level ground.

All varieties need to be level and secured firmly in place, and they all utilize some type of water pump.

Floor fountains can be large and hold a considerable quantity of water in their basins, so keep the safety of children and pets in mind!

Cleaning Tips

Far from a complicated topic, cleaning your fountain is as simple as using a few drops of dish soap and a soft brush once a week, or at whatever interval you find necessary to keep it clean.

Give the basin a nice wash, rinse it out, and refill.

Cleaning the pump (or filter, if applicable) can be a little more complicated. But these, too, are usually easy jobs once you get the hang of it.

Ensure that you’ve unplugged anything hooked to electricity before cleaning! Each pump will have cleaning instructions that are unique, if it needs cleaning at all.

EasyCare FounTec Algaecide and Clarifier, 8 Ounces

EasyCare FounTec Algaecide and Clarifier is available from Amazon.

Safe for plants, birds, and other wildlife, just a few drops added weekly will keep water clear, and free of algae and mosquitoes. This product is not safe for use near fish and should be kept out of reach of children.

Alternatively, try something like Barley Straw Extract to keep the water clean. You’ll find this readily available on Amazon as well.

Microbe Lift Barley Straw Concentrated Extract, 16 Ounces

Lastly, while it’s true that water features can be gorgeous pieces that tie together the entire yard, they really do require some maintenance and upkeep. I have a friend who has this fountain… well, he had this fountain…

… aaaaand that’s my attempt at a joke.

In all seriousness, like any garden project, this is a commitment. Like having a pool, or even a birdbath, regular upkeep is required to keep it in tip-top shape.

Check power lines, clean it regularly, perform any necessary maintenance, and you’ll be able to show your garden feature off to the neighbors for years to come.

Neglect it, and it’s sure to last only a season or two (which equals money down the leaf-clogged drain).

If possible, it is ideal to bring fountains indoors during winter months. If the piece is very large or heavy, at least cover it for protection from snow, ice, rain, and freezing temperatures.

The Perfect Water Feature

The presence of a fountain in a garden can fill any number of uses. It can be a subtle touch for the more reserved space or a loud-and-proud proclamation to draw the attention and ardor of your guests.

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that a good water feature can complete an outdoor space.

A close up horizontal image of a garden fountain in the front of a residence.

What’s more, a fountain can provide a more permanent addition to a garden than some plants and other features.

If you’re like me, then the initial construction will be a great memory to hold onto whenever you hear that bubbling water.
