Bug jam 2016

Bug jam 2016 DEFAULT

If you’re into Volkswagens, particularly the iconic Beetle, then you really can’t afford to miss Bug Jam.

resize-9

The self-proclaimed ‘original and best VW festival’ hit its 30th anniversary this year, so in Bug Jam organisers knew they had to make 2016’s event a memorable one. And boy was it!

Staged at Santa Pod from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th July, Bug Jam’s schedule consisted of drag racing, stunt displays, autojumble, comedy acts, a funfair and not to mention, five gig arenas with performances from Prince and David Bowie tribute acts. Easy may their musical genius rest.

resize-14-(WM)

There were new additions to the event, such as the urban ninja obstacle course and Little Buggerz – an activity area for the under-tens with magicians, Punch & Judy shows and the chance to design your own tie dye t-shirts.
This is all very pleasant, yes, but what about the cars? Oh, there were plenty of those…

Over on the famous Santa Pod raceway, sat this black-as-night Beetle – driven by Sam Young. It was the fastest entry in the ‘run what ya brung’s’ non-road legal group, covering a quarter-mile in 9.6102 seconds, by which time it had reached 146.73mph.

resize-1

Elsewhere in the contest, Scott Oliver’s VW Variant won the aircooled cars category (12.0205 seconds at 100.74mph), while Wayne Bradden’s shabby-chic splitscreen panel van was the fastest to cross the line in the aircooled vans group.

In the watercooled category, Thomas Parrott’s mk1 Golf was the quickest car (12.0831 seconds at 120.90mph) and James Sharp’s VW Doka topping the van group (15.5089 seconds at 88.74mph).

resize-16

resize-15

The peculiar Chesterfield bench seating and lounge chairs in Lee Fullard’s 1967 splitscreen van helped him secure the best interior trophy. Meanwhile, best off-road vehicle went to Mike Smith’s 1974 VW Thing – really, that’s what it’s called. Well, that’s its name in the US anyway. Don’t judge us.

Best van went to Jason Brogan’s 1964 Type 2, while the much sought-after best Beetle prize went to Seaside Neil’s 1956 Oval, which judges, said: “looks every day as old as it is”. Insightful.

Sunday’s show and shine naturally brought out the most gleaming VWs of the event – with Shaun Howe’s candy red 62 Beetle claiming best of show – but the rest of Santa Pod was dotted with some of the most unique and equally cherished VWs.

resize-5

Bug Jam isn’t all about VWs, it’s not even all about cars because one of the biggest highlights of the show this year was the human-powered race, which saw hundreds of people try their hand at covering the Santa Pod’s quarter mile, on foot.

As these pictures suggest, it was mayhem but a whole lot of fun too, with some runners donning fancy dress for the occasion.

resize-6

resize-7

It’s likely that some of the people running on that raceway have attended all thirty Bug Jams. This is the kind of passion and dedication VW, and especially their Beetles, stir up in fans and there’s no suggestion that attendees nor organisers are getting fed up any time soon.

resize-17

The 31st Bug Jam is expected to take place at Santa Pod as usual during July 2017, we hope you’re as excited as we are.

28th Annual Florida Bug Jam

2016 Theme: Marvel “Volkswagens Assemble!”

Sunday, Nov. 13th at the Pasco County Fairgrounds

36722 State Road 52, Dade City, FL 33525 (7 ½ miles east of Interstate 75, off Exit 285)

Woke up early to meet a group of local volks to cruise together to the Pasco Fairgrounds in Dade City. A few of our vw friends had camped overnight from enjoying the Pre-Jam events on Saturday. It was a beautiful morning and thankfully no problems with the car.

Bugjam 2016.1

Spent the day checking out hundreds of vw’s and had a good time searching around the swap meet area too. No luck finding a few pieces I was interested in picking up. Another great turnout for BugJam!

bugjam award

Accepted an award for Mark Bybee, who already left the show. Congratulations!

As usual tradition, we went to Pancho’s Villa Mexican Restaurant with our neighbor for some great grub!

Bug Jam 30 Highlights Video

Bug Jam 30 Report

Bug Jam 30 was one birthday party that did not disappoint and will live on in the memory banks for years to come. In addition to all the usual Bug Jam highlights there were heaps of new additions for the big 3-0. One of the most popular Bug Jam additions was the Little Buggerz kids activity area for the under 10’s which had everything from punch and judy shows and magicians to design your own tie dye T-Shirts. Thanks to the early arrival pass, by time the event properly opened on Friday morning Santa Pod was well on its way to being full and before long there were VWs for as far as the eye can see. We must give a special mention to those that camped so neatly to enable us to create an awesome VW badge as seen from above!

Another new addition was the Urban Ninja obstacle course that was running throughout the weekend and provided much entertainment for those hardy souls giving it a go as well as those that chose to sit on the side-lines watching with their beers. By Friday afternoon there was a hive of activity everywhere you looked with BMX displays from the Cool Flo riders, comedy over in the big top marquee and on track RWYB action.

Air Hockey

In the Fuelers bar we had a brutal air hockey competition where 10 people were narrowed down to just 1 winner. We had all ages take part and it was big Bug Jammer vs. Little Bug Jammer in the final and the gloves were off. To the surprise of many, it was little Jammer Joe Flooks that walked away with the trophy after an awesome final.

Friday night was tribute night on the main stage with tributes to Amy Winehouse, David Bowie and Prince and all acts were awesome! The SkaSouls took care of the Fuelers bar for the night with Club MTV in the dance zone and as voted for by YOU in the Retro zone we had Bug Jam is now 30 with tunes from throughout the years of Bug Jam. The whole music line-up was certainly a highlight and Scouting for Girls on Saturday night had the whole place rocking, even playing their very own campervan song! With Jensen D’Groovers legendary car wash, Toolroom Records and the silent disco there really was something for everyone.

Saturday saw the conclusion of the RWYB competition so congratulations to all of the following winners who ended up at the top of the tables:

This car and it’s stand out paint job feels like it’s been around forever yet never seems to age – a deserved winner on this 30th anniversary.

The Human Powered Race was an absolute monster, too many people to count but we’re convinced it was the biggest ever. Before mentioning the winners we must give a special mention to little Phoenix who did the whole race all on her own on her little space hopper. How she managed the ½ mile in the heat we had is beyond us but there was no way she was giving up. Rightly so, she got the loudest cheer of the lot and thanks to the guy that hung back and rode with her so she wasn’t last over the line. Those that walked away with trophies were:

Fastest Bike & Overall Winner- Ewen Bower
Fastest Runner - James McCafferey
Fastest Skate - Scott Walker
Most Imaginative - The Flintstones

Table Tennis

Another trophy that went out on Saturday was the Table Tennis competition and it was another competition open to both kids and adults alike and it was an adult that had the trophy on this occasion. Well done to Stuart Cook!

On Saturday afternoon it was the audiences turn to be the stars of the show with Bug Jam's got Talent on the stage. Singers, guitarists, dancers and a magician competed but it was young Lily who took the prize.

It’s been another massive weekend from all aspects and long may we continue to share weekends like this. Thanks to everyone that came along and got involved and brought their VW’s, especially the clubs that are such a fundamental part of the show. Thank You Bug Jammers – you’re all awesome and we’ll see you back here next year!
