Best online liquor store reddit

Best online liquor store reddit DEFAULT

Once you read all these perks, you'll never stock up anywhere else.

1. You don't have to be a member to buy alcohol.

Many states have a law prohibiting stores from requiring membership to purchase alcohol, which means you can buy alcohol without a club card. You're in luck if you reside in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Texas, or Vermont. Not every cashier knows the law, so be ready to explain your case to a manager.

2. Costco is the largest wine retailer in the U.S.

Wine makes up nearly half of the big box store's yearly alcohol sales. The most recent number Costco shared was $1.69 billion in 2016 wine sales, which placed it as the country's largest wine seller.

3. You can stock your entire bar with Kirkland brand booze.

Kirkland-branded wine was first produced in 2003, followed by hard alcohol in 2007 and later craft beer. Now, you can buy nearly every spirit under Costco's signature in-house label: American and French vodka, Scotch, whiskey, bourbon, rum tequila, and gin.

4. Big-name brands make some Kirkland spirits.

Here are the rumored names behind the bottles.

  • Kirkland beer is brewed by Gordon Biersch.
  • Kirkland Scotch are distilled by either Alexander Murray and Macallan Distillery.
  • Kirkland bourbon and rum is produced by Jim Beam.
  • Kirkland vodka is made from the same water source and by the same employees that Grey Goose uses.
  • Kirkland tequila is produced in the same distillery as Cielo tequila.

5. Costco's wine markups are half that of most stores.

Many boutique wine shops sell bottles for up to 50 percent more than what the wholesale price is. Costco's markups hover around 14 percent. That means, the cost of the same bottle of wine purchased at Costco versus another retailer could differ greatly — in Costco's favor.

6. Keep an eye out for asterisks.

If you see this tiny star (*) in the upper right hand corner of a sign, it means Costco has the item on clearance. This is when you'll get the best deal, but it also might be the last time Costco restocks the product. Scoop up as many bottles while you can.

7. You can keep those empty wood wine cases that are lying around.

You know how Costco keeps empty cardboard boxes near checkout registers that are free for the taking? Same goes for any empty wine cases you see in the aisles. Designers go nuts for them, so take note: They make great-looking storage bins.

8. Don't try to return alcohol.

Costco is known for its insanely liberal return policy, but they don't budge on booze. It doesn't matter if your bottles are opened or sealed; Costco won't give you a refund, so bottoms up.

We live in a world where nearly anything can be delivered to your home whenever you need it. You can deck out your entire wardrobe without leaving your couch, get your juice cleanse fix shipped right to your front door, buy plane tickets and book an Uber to the airport, and order every meal takeout. While these solutions aren’t always the most economical, they are convenient, and if you’re trying to save time or avoid in-person shopping because of the pandemic, then ordering online is the way to go.

The latest craze to hit the e-comm scene? Convenient wine, beer and other alcohol delivery services. With sites like Drizly and MiniBar up and running in most major cities, you don’t have to schlep all the way to the corner store before your pregame to stock up on your favorite go-to Pinots, craft beer, tequila and craft cocktail supplies. Of course, the legality of alcohol delivery depends on which state you live in, as well as the state laws currently in place. Due to the legal restrictions placed on alcohol purchases, which vary state by state, knowing whether you’re actually allowed to order your favorite gin for delivery can be confusing. Thankfully, we’ve done the research so you don’t have to.

Alcohol shipping and delivery is a state-specific issue. And, like you may have already guessed, each state’s laws differ in ways ranging from small discrepancies in the number of liters permitted to wholesale bans on specific types of booze. There are some states where you can’t get any alcohol delivered to your residence at all (damn) and some states with restrictions on the quantity of alcohol you can buy. Most states do allow wine to be delivered, and it’s a safe bet that anywhere you live is going to require you to be present for the delivery and have a legal ID that proves you’re over the legal drinking age of 21.

Because these rules can be confusing and vary so widely from state to state, we’ve put together a guide to frequently asked questions about buying alcohol online. In addition to answering these common questions, we’ll also share a state-by-state breakdown of alcohol delivery laws. Keep in mind that this is not official legal advice, and you should consult your state laws if you have any further questions. Of course, we’d like to remind our readers that this guide is for adults age 21 and over, and we encourage you to drink responsibly.

How Do You Order Alcohol Online?

In general, there are three ways to order alcohol online: on-demand alcohol delivery, retail alcohol services and subscription services. Most states allow you to purchase alcohol online, although the rules vary from state to state. There may also be different rules of different types of alcohol, with varying laws for beer, wine, liquor and pre-made cocktails.

What Are On-Demand Alcohol Delivery Services?

On-demand alcohol services like Drizly have a similar business model as Grubhub or Doordash. They connect you to local liquor stores. Once you place an order, a delivery person will pick up your order and bring it to you. Drizly operates in many major U.S. cities and is a quick and convenient way to get alcohol, beer and wine delivered, sometimes in as little as 30-60 minutes.

drizly alcohol deliveryCourtesy of Drizly

What Are the Best Online Liquor Stores?

Online shoppers can find many online alcohol stores like Reserve Bar or Total Wine. These retailers operate like any other online store, although delivery options will depend on the state you live in.

Is It Legal To Order Alcohol Online?

You can order alcohol online in 48 of 50 U.S. states (every state except Alabama and Utah), although there are restrictions on the type and amount of alcohol that can be delivered in some states. Regardless of location, you will likely be required to show a valid government-issued ID upon delivery proving you are over 21 years old.

Can You Order Alcohol Online in Utah or Alabama?

If you live in Utah or Alabama, then we’re sorry because we have bad news: you can’t get any alcohol delivered whatsoever. If you live in Mississippi, your laws are a bit of a question mark, and it’s best to err on the safe side and head to a store instead.

The Best Places To Order Alcohol Online?

In our experience, the best places to buy alcohol online are Drizly and Reserve Bar. Drizly is an on-demand delivery service that connects you to local liquor stores, while Reserve Bar is a great place to find top-shelf liquor for shipping. If you’re looking for a monthly subscription service, we also love Flaviar and First Leaf Wine Club.

Ordering Alcohol Online: Laws for All 50 States

Now, here’s a state-by-state breakdown of what’s allowed, and how much of it, to be shipped and delivered to you. Some states have augmented their laws about alcohol delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic to help restaurants and bars stay afloat. I’ve included these updates in this list below.

Alabama

No alcohol deliveries whatsoever. In fact, 26/67 counties in Alabama are dry, meaning they don’t permit the sale of alcohol at all.

Alaska

Alaska – Alaska allows businesses with a permit to sell and ship wine in quantities of five gallons or less to an area where possession of alcohol is legal.

Arizona

Alcohol deliveries are allowed with a valid license.

Arkansas

Arkansas allows one case of “vinous liquor” to be delivered to a customer per quarter, a.k.a wine. These purchases must have been made at a winery, and deliveries can only happen during legal purchasing hours.

California

Shipments of up to two nine-liter cases can be delivered to any California resident adult per month. The shipment needs to be clearly labeled with how much and of what is inside, and the recipient cannot be drunk.

Colorado

Colorado allows wine to be delivered to those over the age of 21.

Connecticut

Deliveries of up to five gallons of wine to an adult are permitted every two months. You can also get beer delivered but it has to be in a gift basket via a valid gift basket retailer permit on behalf of the seller. We didn’t even know gift basket permits were a thing…

Delaware

Delivery of alcohol is not allowed at a private residence.

District of Columbia

Washington D.C. allows shipments of wine, spirits and beer. During the Coronavirus pandemic they passed an emergency relief bill for bars and restaurants that allowed alcohol delivery within the city.

Florida

Businesses with proper licenses can ship alcoholic beverages directly to consumers with no obvious limits or restrictions.

Hawaii

Customers can receive up to six nine-liter cases of wine to their address annually. Drink up!

Idaho

Direct shipments of wine are permitted.

Illinois

Any adult who’s a resident in the state can receive up to 12 cases of wine per year. In 2015, Illinois also made it legal for breweries to make deliveries, and amidst the pandemic unopened alcohol is legal to pickup or deliver from restaurants, bars and breweries.

Indiana

You can only receive 216 liters of wine per year to a private residence. Why such a specific number?

Iowa

Wine shipments are allowed.

Kansas

Consumers can receive up to 12 cases of wine a year, and during the COVID-19 outbreak all liquor-license holders can offer curbside wine, beer and liquor pickup or delivery.

Kentucky

You can receive alcohol deliveries if you purchased it in person.

Louisiana

Alcohol deliveries of all kinds are legal to a person 21 years or older.

Maine

You can’t ship more than 12 cases a year to a single recipient.

Maryland

Recipients can receive up to 18 nine-liter cases of wine or pomace brandy (?) to their address in one year. You must be 21 years or older to accept the package.

Massachusetts

Residents can receive up to nine liters of wine per shipment, but there doesn’t seem to be a limit on the number of shipments annually. Breweries can also ship beer to customers if they have the proper license.

Michigan

Direct wine sales are allowed.

Minnesota

Local deliveries are strict when it comes to IDs and licenses of delivery drivers, but you can get wine, beer and other spirits delivered.

Mississippi

The state doesn’t specify whether booze deliveries are legal, but the Department of Revenue does specify that wine ordered online cannot be brought into the state. This one’s bizarre, just avoid it.

Missouri

Private residences can receive up to 2 cases of wine a month.

Montana

As a resident, you can receive up to 18 nine-liter cases of wine each year. You can also receive up to 12 cases of beer from a brewery out of state each year.

Nebraska

Anyone 21+ can receive up to nine liters of liquor per month. Nebraska has also augmented the rules for Class I and Class A liquor license holders who are now legally able to sell beer, wine and spirits for takeout and delivery.

Nevada

As a vendor, you can ship up to a gallon of spirits per month or 12 cases of wine to a private residence each year.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire allows the delivery of beer, wine and liquor — with limits of 60 one-liter containers of wine and 27 gallons of beer — each year.

New Jersey

You’re allowed to receive up to 12 cases of wine per year.

New Mexico

Wine or cider shipments are permitted, you’re allowed up to two nine-liter cases of wine per month. This includes alcohol purchases made online.

New York

A statewide order was passed during the pandemic allowing breweries and restaurants to sell liquor for takeout along with food orders.

North Carolina

Proper permits are required for everyday customers to receive shipments, so it might be easier to just head to the store.

North Dakota

You’re allowed 27 liters of wine, 288 fluid ounces of beer or nine liters of a spirit to be delivered per month.

Ohio

A private household can purchase up to 24 cases of wine each year and get them delivered.

Oklahoma

While alcohol deliveries are not normally allowed in this state, they’ve issued a temporary order during the COVID-19 pandemic that allows wine, beer and spirits to be delivered to customers.

Oregon

Oregon allows the shipment or wine, cider or malt beverages with proper permits.

Pennsylvania

Deliveries of wine, beer and spirits are allowed.

Rhode Island

Alcohol deliveries are legal to adults who show photo ID, and they need to be made during legal hours for alcohol sale, and there needs to be a detailed invoice of what’s inside the shipment.

South Carolina

Businesses are allowed curbside pickup of beer and wine, shipments are allowed to be delivered with proper ID.

South Dakota

Shipments of wine, beer and spirits are allowed with proper ID upon delivery.

Tennessee

Shipments of wine are allowed to private residences.

Texas

Texas has also passed a temporary policy during the COVID-19 pandemic where liquor, beer and wine can be sold along with takeout orders at restaurants.

Utah

Direct sales of alcohol to residents are not permitted.

Vermont

Direct shipments of malt beverages and wine are permitted.

Virginia

Shipments of beer and wine are allowed, and during the COVID-19 pandemic businesses that have a liquor license on the premise can sell wine or beer for pickup or delivery without a delivery permit.

Washington

The state allows direct wine shipments, and is allowing businesses to sell beer, wine and spirits for takeout or delivery during the pandemic.

West Virginia

Wine deliveries are allowed and require an electronic signature upon acceptance.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin allows wine to be shipped to its residents.

Wyoming

Wine shipments are allowed to residents with proper permits on behalf of the seller.

5 Best Sites to Buy Beer Online

There’s no doubt we’re living in the golden age of online shopping. Virtually anything your heart desires can be researched, paid for, and summoned to your home with just a few taps on your phone or clicks of a mouse. But why stop at frivolous Amazon purchases and curated subscription boxes when you can order your favorite beer directly to your front door?

These days, there are more websites, apps, and services dedicated to selling beer online than ever before. Some of them even promise delivery times of an hour or less, rivaling your local pizzeria on a busy night. That means you can go from being completely beer-less to holding a brand new six-pack in less than 60 minutes—all without ever leaving the comfort of your couch. It might not be the future inventors of the internet had originally imagined, but we’re certainly not complaining.

It’s worth noting these services tend to be more popular in bigger cities than in the outskirts of towns or suburbia’s rural pockets. And specific alcohol shipping laws vary from state to state, so some of these options unfortunately won’t be available in every corner of the country. But, if you are lucky enough to live in a place that allows you to send suds straight to your door, you might as well take advantage of it, right?

Whether you’re a first-time user just discovering the wonders of purchasing beer on the world wide web or a seasoned repeat customer who just can’t get enough, here are some of the best sites to check out the next time you’re looking to buy some brewskies online.

1. Drizly

Best for: Super speedy delivery times

Get More Info

When it comes to ordering your beer through the interweb, no service is more streamlined than Drizly. “Drizly started in Boston about six and a half years ago, and the thought was delivery is happening across so many verticals, so why not alcohol?”, according to Drizly CEO Cory Rellas. Through the Drizly app or site, users can shop for their favorite beers and be connected with a local licensed retailer who will fulfill the order. They boast an impressive range of breweries to suit any craving, spanning from the big-box brands to the lesser-known craft breweries. But the speed factor is their real selling point. Depending on your city, deliveries can take less than an hour to arrive, meaning you can get the party started in no time. And although the service does have an urban focus, they plan on expanding to more suburban areas in the future.

2. Minibar Delivery

Best for: Big-city imbibers

Get More Info

Your favorite brew is just a few taps away with Minibar. Like Drizly, the company doesn’t hold their own liquor license—instead, they opt to partner with local liquor stores and suppliers to provide the goods. Fans love the app’s easy-to-navigate interface and conveniently organized inventory. Their beer selection is enviable, spanning from under-the-radar breweries to international staples (not to mention their entire library of liquor, wine, and mixers). And be sure to keep your eyes peeled for discounted bottles or starred selections, which indicate official staff picks. Orders can also be placed up to two weeks in advance, which can be an especially helpful feature for the amateur party planner. Speaking of parties, you can even use Minibar to book a bartender to work your next event (although the service is currently limited to their major markets like New York City and Denver).

3. Tavour

Best for: Discovering new brews

Get More Info

Seattle-based Tavour launched a few years back as a more curated answer to the growing number of beer-of-the-month clubs cluttering the market. Their approach implements a familiar subscription-service format, but puts control back in the users’ hands. Their members get to hand-select the beers they want (so they’re never sent something they aren’t interested in), and they can also decide when they want to receive their shipment. Every day, Tavour experts introduce two new beers they’ve identified as being on the rise (along with their own tasting notes), so there’s truly an ever-evolving rotation of options to choose from. Shipment times depend on your location (typically three days to a week), but you always pay one flat rate for shipping. “Tavour is the best way to enjoy craft beers from around the world,” according to Philip Vaughn, the company’s founder. “Our beer is fresher than what you find in the store because we get [them] within days of being bottled or canned and offer them via the app.”

4. Craftshack

Best for: Indecisive craft-beer lovers

Get More Info

Craftshack is another prevalent player in the beer-delivery space that’s been around for a few years. Their expansive online inventory offers something for everyone, ranging from saisons to smoked beers to sour porters. With more than 1,000 varieties to choose from, indecisive drinkers might feel overwhelmed while perusing their digital database. Luckily, their store helps customers pare down the options and discover new styles thanks to a nifty set of filters (think: Game of Thrones beers, San Diego breweries, trending beers, and more). Plus, they also carry libations like meads, ciders, hard seltzers, and kombucha in addition to hard liquor. With flat shipping rates, it’ll cost the same whether you’re buying one bottle or a whole mix-and-match case, so don’t hold back. And if you don’t like a specific beer, they’ll happily send you a replacement (as long as you agree to cover the shipping).

5. Hopsy

Best for: Draft beer connoisseurs

Get More Info

If you’re a diehard draft-beer lover, you probably have to leave your house or apartment to enjoy a fresh-poured pint from the keg (unless you’re living in some sort of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia situation). But now Hopsy is here to save the day. The service uses a revolutionary SUB Home Tap draft system that sits on your counter and lets you transform your place into a pub. Just plug it in and you’re ready to pour. It doesn’t require pesky CO2 cartridges and it comes with its own refrigeration system that keeps your beer fresh and chilled to perfection. “Hopsy works directly with top brewers to source the best beers and also give consumers access to their limited releases on tap at home,” explains Sebastien Tron, Hopsy founder and CEO. This allows them to stock everything from popular fan favorites to small-batch finds. Simply order a mini-keg online, sign off on the delivery, and load it into your SUB to start sipping. Shipping availability depends on your location and can take four days to two weeks to arrive.

Awesome And fast

My first time using app. They sent a notification that my order was picked up. They sent reminders of when the delivery will take place. They sent a notification with link to substitute one of the items that was sold out and have suggestions for replacement. My delivery guy Bryshere ( love the name) texted me 5 minutes before arrival. Since it was my first time they needed to scan my ID. It went very well. I was surprised to see that he was not wearing anything to protect himself though. No mask no gloves. He was very professional and the whole thing took less than 1 minute. I didn’t realize that tips are given through app after the exchange, so I gave him cash tip. I am so glad there are people brave and committed to their work to help those who can not or choose not to risk exposure.

the absolute WORST app i have ever used.

They advertise delivery service under an hour, my estimated wait time ALONE was “89 minutes,” that’s not including the time i spent playing russian roulette with vapes trying to figure out “what they had in stock”. turns out, the shop was just saying they didn’t have any of the flavors i wanted in stock (substituted about 15 times by the end of it, repeating flavors). FINALLY got through to support after waiting 20 minutes & guess what, they MAGICALLY had the flavor in stock that i wanted - one that they had said wasn’t in stock, hmmm 🧐. guess what? that was the FIRST time i used the app. i absolutely tried to give this app a few chances (5 to be exact), i ordered off here 5 times in an attempt to be able to say that it was a *decent* app, but it’s absolutely terrible. this situation repeated to varying degrees each time, usually worse than the previous experience though. ALSO - NONE of the drivers knew how to scan my ID card. NONE knew what they were suppose to do & asked me, THE CUSTOMER, “how do i scam your ID? I don’t know how to scan it to approve your delivery”. teach your drivers how to use your app before sending them on a delivery. i will be deleting this app & never using it again. don’t waste your time w this one.

Don’t waste your time and money!

This app is trash! I knew something wasn’t right about it from the very start because they don’t have a customer service number, but I tried to do the right thing during this pandemic and stay in the house. Not only did the guy never show up with our beer, but he lied about us not answering our phone and proceeded to yell at my girlfriend and hang up on her. Then he said he would come back, and when the ETA said he was outside he really wasn’t and kept sending us to voicemail! How very unprofessional. They don’t give you enough info on the driver either. No description of the car or how they look like most major deliver apps do. Not to mention they claim we will get a full refund but it won’t be until 5-10 business days!!! I would’ve just went to the store if I’d known they would just send us off like that. In fact I would’ve saved about $20 bucks had I gone to the store since they are obviously overpriced. My beer normally goes for $10 but I paid $16 just so I can practice social distancing. We spend $40 and got nothing in return! How frustrating right! Trash trash trash!

Saving lives & money!!

I used this app. I was already a little tipsy after not having a drink for some time and their only being a sip of what I had left before using. I had heard about this app and felt “if they want a drink n r outta booze they WILL DRIVE DRUNK FOR MORE” so I want to support the app. I was expecting everything g to be crazy high priced. But it had BETTER DEALS THEN MY LOCAL STORE! N I figured it would be hard to use! I HAD my order In hand with-in 32 min (and I live in middle of no where) and it was CHEAPER THEM if I went myself on cost. The delivery charge was not even 5 dollars and that covered tip. Of course people if these folk let u stay home and party and never worry about a DUI OR WORSE!! You need to take care of them, this is basically a designated driver site for people who want to stay home and party or find themselves in the position they’re just not comfortable driving. So think what would u tip to ensure EVERYONES SAFETY AND STILL ALLOWS U TO PARTY OR EVEN JUST ORDER A BUNCH OF JUCIE AND ENERGY DRINKS the next morning !

A Let Down

Please don’t advertise that you can deliver items within an hour if you can’t guarantee it. Downloaded the app and was excited to use it for the first time. I was running late, so decided to give it a try. I placed an order while i started cooking dinner. By the time I was done cooking and ready to eat, I decided to check my order an hour and 10 minutes later. It was still at the store! Couldn’t find a phone number, so i had to write an email.

To their credit, they responded quickly. Amazingly enough, after I wrote the first email, I then received a phone call from a driver apologizing it was going to take longer than advertised (an additional 25 minutes). This is a phone call expected within the initial hour. I then get a reply stating “I'm very sorry there was a delay with your order. We're working hard to bring on additional retailers to cut down on delivery time in the future.” The liquor is less than 10 minutes from my house. They offered to credit my account on their next two replies, but I just wanted to cancel my order because at this point it would be faster for me to go to the store and get it myself. I do want to compliment their customer service. Replies were quicker than expected. I’ll be monitoring my bank account to make sure it’s returned. Tried to use their service because it was convenient at the time.

It’s my alcohol and I need it now!

Remember that ad? I do. All those people wondering where their money was. This is like that except with alcohol. I placed an order for delivery on a Friday afternoon around 7, Drizzly says their are lots of orders due to this dang virus that’s messing up the world (crazy times, can’t wait till this is over, hope everyone reading this is safe,) so it might take a little longer than usual. I’m not impatient. As long as I get it that night I’m happy! Planned to make some drinks. Liquor never came. Waited hours and hours, no calls and no emails and no texts. I wake up late next morning to a notification saying my order was delivered. Woke up excited, expected it to either be in my entryway or apartment and it was nowhere to be found. I called the store, the owner remembers seeing my address in the queue but doesn’t remember anyone delivering there. So I asked Drizzly where my stuff was. No answer. For a whole day, no answer. So I tried again the next morning and again no answer. I finally wrote at 5:30 on Sunday about 48 hours after I placed the order and got a very quick reply and found my money was being returned to me. While I thank Drizzly for finally making things right, it took a ridiculously long time and I’m looking elsewhere for liquor delivery. If you choose to use the app, I hope your experience is different.
