Review of the Ground Hawg Mud Tire

The Ground Hawg Mud Tire is a timeless classic "old-school" traditional Mud Tire Design that is reminiscent of early generation Mud Tires yet developed under today's technologies by Interco Corporation.  Originally designed by the The Denman Tire Company, the Ground Hawg is a directional tread design mud tire which offers superior performance in thick mud, deep snow, and rocky terrain.  Available in Bias & Radial designs, the Ground Hawg has an aggressive tread design that is made to work very well in deep mud yet wear well under normal highway usage.  Several features of the Ground Hawg make this the choice mud tire for classic truck pull series as well as offroaders who have been ripping through the mud for decades.  For offroad toughness the Ground Hawg Bias Tires are the better choice with up to 8 tread plys and 4 sidewall plys.

The tread design is very aggressive and complemented with massive siped outer lugs for clawing and digging in mud and snow.   Inner staggered lugs are designed for a larger footprint and siped for traction, self cleaning and longevity on the highway beyond the average, mud terrain tire.  The heavy duty construction is made from a durable tubeless nylon construction with a bulky rubber compound.  Sidewall protection and traction is enhanced by deep sideway lugs extending far above the tread's huge directional outer lugs.  Outer lugs are also designed to accept studs for even better traction, offroad as well as on ice and in deep snow and mud.

For those who prefer a Radial designed tire, the Ground Hawg offers it's Ground Hawg II Radial Tires.  The Ground Hawg II Radial Tires offers the best features from the Ground Hawg Bias Tires, but in a radial design. The Radial design offers 6 and 10 ply in the tread area but only a 2 ply for the sidewall, although the wrap-around tread design offers greater sidewall protection over most mud terrain radial design tires.

    Tire cobalt sizes mt

With the advent of the hybrid mud-terrain tires from almost every manufacturer, the Cobalt from Interco is a genuine throwback to a single purpose tire with some modern tweaks.

    Cobalt Design Elements

If the tread pattern on the Cobalt looks familiar that’s because it is. Previously known as the Ground Hawg Interco had to change the name of the new tire as the original trademark belongs to another company. The same design elements remain.

Directional tread pattern with the lugs heavy in the center of the tire and massive wide tractor tire styled outer lugs. There is still a center circumferential groove but it has been improved with deep sipes that expel water and mud from the center tread into those outer sweeping lugs.

The siping is now close to full lug depth to aid in wet and winter traction and the extra spaces help keep the tire quieter.

    Noise

Looking at the tire you would think it’s a noisy original Super Swamper volume tire. You and I would be wrong. The new rubber compound, the deep lateral siping, and open to the edge voids contribute to a very quiet ride. They are almost silent on our TJ test bed.

    Cobalt Snow and Wet Traction

The Cobalt does well enough in the wet and snow to make them an everyday tire. The major drawback is the lack of rubber in contact with the road in both the wet and snow.

Optimum snow traction is found when a tire can grip snow in the tread and use that to gain traction. Those massive lug voids just don’t have the ability to keep the snow packed in there to maximize traction. We tested these in MN this winter and they got the Jeep everywhere we needed it to, but it wasn’t always the most controlled drive and the back end definitely wanted to step out often and violently when it lost traction. The TJ owner would not let his wife and daughter drive the Jeep in the snow. If you live in a milder climate or somewhere that gets minimal snow these tires will be fine.

The same can be said for wet traction. It moves a ton of water but the lack of rubber on the road means they do hydroplane a bit more than we would like.

    Cobalt Dry Traction

There are almost no tires left for sale that don’t perform well in the dry. I used to sell some under $20 tires when I worked at a Montgomery Ward’s auto center. They were so hard that I always felt they were sketchy on anything but a degree day.

The Cobalt works well in everyday driving, no weird handling feel, they are predictable and provide far more traction than the wide tread pattern looks like it would.

    Mud!!!!

This is what these tires were made for. The short video below shows how they push through the slop and muck. Those wide sipes and massive void lugs are the perfect match when playing in the mud. They clean themselves at low wheel speed and just dig to give you forward traction.

    Final Verdict

At $ for a 35××17 these are not budget tires. If you are looking for a full on mud tire that can double duty on a daily driven truck or Jeep in everything but the worst snowstorms you have to pay to play. Top 3 BEST Mud Terrain Tires Review \u0026 Comparison

The INTERCO Cobalt M/T Mud Terrain Tire

In late spring INTERCO Tire launched the Cobalt M/T, the newest addition to the already largest selection of specialty light truck tires on the planet.  The INTERCO Cobalt M/T might take some styling clues from a popular tire of the past, but that is as far as it goes. The Cobalt M/T is all new from the ground up and built using state of the art technology and produced in all new segmented molds.

INTERCO’s Cobalt M/T was developed using today’s newest technology and incorporates many features one would expect to find in a modern mud terrain tire.  The Cobalt M/T’s Aggressive styling, radial construction, longer tread life compound, noise reducing design features and an MSRP that make it one of the most competitively priced aggressive, radial mud-terrains on the market will surely have the off-road truck and jeep crowd excited about this new offering for years to come.

Since most all trucks that have rolled out of Detroit have come standard with 17” or larger wheels, as have all Jeeps produced since   In order to gauge market response, the initial test size offered in the Cobalt M/Ts was a x tire available for vehicles with 17”, 18”, 20” and 22” wheels. A larger 37x version will be offered sometime in the fall of , with undetermined wheel sizes comparable to the 35s.  Interco will evaluate the markets response and develop a complete line of the Cobalt tires in sizes based on market feedback. Plans for a 38x and 17/40 are already on the development board, and rumor has it that most all sizes of the Cobalt M/Ts will be available for 15”, ”, 17”, 18”, 20”, 22” and 24” wheels, but no ETA on when this stage will be complete has been released, but sometiume in seems to be the year, with 31x, 33x and 33x versions following close behind.

The Cobalt M/T exhibits the same of off-road performance similar to that of the legendary tire it takes it’s styling from.  The Cobalt M/T incorporates scooped side lugs that give the tire a more squared off look, but also reduced road noise that is a concern with large, aggressive lugged tires. Lug height is a modest 24/32 or ¾”.  This is shorter than what most people would expect from this lug pattern, but it matches the height of pretty much all other radial mud terrains on the market.  The lugs may be a tad shorter than historically noted, but the additional siping that follow the lug over the shoulder allows the tire to handle better than ever on wet and icy terrain, while the over-all performance of these tires is utterly amazing.  Mud – check. Sand – check. Rocks - check.  Snow - check. Slush - check. Asphalt - check.  The Interco Cobalt M/T mud terrain tire is truly an all-terrain mud terrain.

The years of design and testing put into the Coblat M/T has paid off, and they poised to take a spot along side of the other legendary tires INTERCO already lays claim to in our garage.
